[우리문화신문=최우성 기자] 강화도 북동쪽 돌출한 곳에 있는 연미정(燕尾亭)은 정면 3칸 측면 2칸의 한국 전통정자다. 연미정은 한강과 임진강으로 오르내리는 배들이 반드시 거쳐야 하는 요충지로, 상업적으로 뿐 아니라, 군사적 요충지로 '월곶진'이라는 작은 돈대(작은 성곽)의 안쪽에 있어, 일반적인 한국의 정자와는 달리 한강 입구에서 수도 서울을 지키는 최전방 물길의 초소였다.
그러나 남북이 갈라진 뒤로 건너편이 바로 북한인지라, 옛날 번성하던 때 하루면 수백척이 오르내리던 배는 볼 수가 없고, 혹시나 북한측으로 부터 무엇인가 떠내려오지 않을까 감시하는 국군 해병대 초소가 세워져 철저히 감시하고 있다. 지금은 조용히 강물과 바닷물이 만나는 곳이지만, 얼마전까지는 남북이 험악한 상황이 되었을 때는 북쪽의 대형 스피커에서 기괴한 소음이 하루종일 들려와 주민들이 소음 노이로제를 호소하며 해결책을 요구하기도 하였다.
연미정 정자에서 북쪽을 건너다보면 제비꼬리처럼 보인다고 하여 이름을 연미정이라고 붙였다는 유래를 생각하며 무심한 듯 조용히 흐르는 한강과 임진강물을 살펴 보았다. 그리고 언젠가 또 다시 이곳이 한강을 거슬러 올라 서울로 오르내리는 물길이 열리고, 또 임진강을 거슬러 올라 개성으로 오르내리는 물길이 열리는 날을 상상해 보았다.
제비는가을이면 중국 강남과 필리핀을 거쳐 멀리 호주까지 갔다가 봄이 되면 머나먼 길을 돌아와서 한국 땅에서 집을 짓고 새로운 가족을 만들어 성장한 뒤에 다시 가을이면 떠난다고 한다. 제비가족들이 이 땅에서 새 세대를 만들어 종족을 이어가듯 이땅이 통일이 되어 우리 배달겨레가 세계로 도약할 수 있는 축복의 땅이 되었으면 얼마나 좋을까 생각해 본다. 언젠가 한민족의 봄이 와서 강남갔던 제비가 돌아오듯 통일도 온다면 그 때는 한민족의 봄이 될텐데...

Yeonmijeong in Wolgotjin, which protrudes to the northeast of Ganghwa Island

Located on a northeastern peninsula of Ganghwado Island, Yeonmijeong is a traditional Korean pavilion measuring three bays in front and two bays on the side. Historically, it was a vital bottleneck for boats traveling up and down the Hangang and Imjin rivers. Beyond its commercial importance, it held strategic military value. Situated inside a small fortress called Wolgotjin, it served as a frontline riverfront outpost defending the capital, Seoul, unlike most typical Korean pavilions.
However, since the division of the Korean Peninsula, the opposing shore has become North Korean territory. The hundreds of boats that once bustled here daily have vanished. Instead, a South Korean Marine Corps guard post stands watch, meticulously monitoring the waters for anything that might drift down from the North. While the confluence of the river and the sea remains quiet now, tense inter-Korean relations not long ago meant that bizarre noises from North Korean loudspeakers blared all day, leading local residents to complain of noise-induced distress and demand solutions.
Looking out from the pavilion toward the north, I observed the indifferent, quietly flowing waters of the Hangang and Imjin rivers, reflecting on the origin of its name, Yeonmijeong—so called because the landscape resembles a swallow’s tail. I imagined a day when this waterway would reopen for ships traveling up the Hangang to Seoul and up the Imjin to Kaesong.
Swallows migrate to Jiangnan in China, the Philippines, and as far as Australia in autumn. When spring arrives, they make the long journey back to Korea to build nests, raise new families, and depart again when autumn returns. Just as these swallow families sustain their generation on this land, I hope that reunification will come, transforming this peninsula into a blessed land where the Korean people can leap forward onto the global stage. If the spring of the Korean nation arrives and reunification returns like the migrating swallows, that will truly be the spring of our people.

江華島（カンファド）の北東部に突き出た場所にある「燕尾亭（ヨンミジョン）」は、正面3間、側面2間の韓国の伝統的な東屋（あずまや）である。燕尾亭は、漢江（ハンガン）と臨津江（イムジンガン）を行き来する船が必ず通らなければならない要衝地であった。商業的な重要性だけでなく、軍事的な要衝地でもあり、「月串鎮（ウォルゴッチン）」という小さな頓台（小規模な城郭）の内側にあるため、一般的な韓国の東屋とは異なり、漢江の入り口から首都ソウルを守る最前線の水路の見張り所であった。
しかし、南北が分断されてからは対岸がすぐ北朝鮮となったため、かつて繁栄していた頃に1日何百隻も行き交っていた船の姿を見ることはできず、北朝鮮側から何か流れ着いてこないかを徹底的に監視する韓国軍海兵隊の警戒所が設置されている。今は静かに川と海が交わる場所であるが、少し前まで南北が険悪な状況だった頃には、北側の大型スピーカーから不気味な騒音が1日中聞こえてきており、住民たちが騒音ノイローゼを訴えて解決策を求めることもあった。
燕尾亭から北側を眺めるとツバメの尾のように見えることから、その名が付けられたという由来に思いを馳せながら、何事もなかったかのように静かに流れる漢江と臨津江の水面を見つめた。そして、いつの日か再びここが漢江をさかのぼってソウルへと行き交う水路として開かれ、また臨津江をさかのぼって開城（ケソン）へと行き交う水路が開かれる日を想像してみた。
ツバメは秋になると中国の江南（カンナム）やフィリピンを経て、遠くオーストラリアまで渡り、春になると長い道のりを経て戻ってきて、韓国の地で巣を作り、新しい家族を育てる。そして秋になると再び旅立つという。ツバメの家族がこの地で新しい世代を育てて命を繋いでいくように、この地が統一され、我々韓民族（倍達の民）が世界へと飛躍できる祝福の地となることを願ってやまない。いつの日か韓民族の春が訪れ、江南へ行ったツバメが戻ってくるように統一が実現するなら、その時こそが韓民族の真の春となるだろう。
