Youth Kim Yong-chang Martyrs in Prison Just Four Months Before Liberation

The following is the historical background to help understand this article. Today's Republic of Korea became a colony due to the invasion of Japanese imperialism in 1910. Since then, Korean citizens—regardless of age or gender—resisted the invading nation of Japan to reclaim their stolen homeland, sacrificing their property and lives for the liberation of their country. On August 15, 1945, the homeland finally achieved liberation, but countless people lost their lives fighting against Japanese imperialism for this cause. A 19-year-old youth, Kim Yong-chang, is one of them. Since his martyrdom, his hometown of Hwaseong City has held annual memorial services for him, and a book titled Graffiti Independence Movement, which covers his independence activism, was recently published. We hope this helps you understand the article.

At the end of the Pacific War in 1945, amidst the extreme atrocities of Japanese imperialism, numerous individuals cried out for the independence of their homeland and lost their lives in dark prisons. At the very end of that brutal history, on April 3, 1945—just four months before liberation—a youth collapsed in prison like cold frost. This is Patriot Kim Yong-chang, who marks the 81st anniversary of his martyrdom this year. When he closed his eyes due to the aftereffects of severe torture and malnutrition, he was only nineteen years old, in the prime of his youth.

Born in Sangdu-ri, Hyangnam-eup, Hwaseong City, as the eldest of three sons and two daughters, he graduated from Hyangnam Elementary School and moved to Seoul alone at the young age of 15. During the day, he worked as an errand boy at the Seoul Postal Bureau Insurance Management Office, sending the money he earned to his parents in his hometown, and at night, he attended Deoksu Public Commercial School, never letting go of his education. Patriot Kim Yong-chang eventually martyred in prison on April 3, 1945.

However, the reality he faced as a colonial youth was grim. Angered by the discrimination against Koreans and forced labor, he picked up a brush.

"Awake, 26 million compatriots of the peninsula! The time for Joseon's independence has come. Yet now, they speak of volunteers and conscription. Ah! How pitiful."

He took the lead in awakening the national consciousness of his compatriots by leaving such anti-Japanese messages on streets and buildings. Eventually arrested by the Japanese police in May 1944, he was sentenced to one year and six months in prison under the pretexts of "Insult to the Japanese Emperor" and "Disturbance of Public Peace." Around the same time Poet Yun Dong-ju passed away in a Japanese prison, he ultimately drew his last breath after suffering severe hardships. The Japanese authorities merely sent a cold, single-line notification to his family stating, "He died of illness."

His noble legacy remained buried for a long time until 1995—the 50th anniversary of his martyrdom and national liberation—when a government official located his surviving family and finally revealed it to the world. Only then did his siblings learn that their older brother was an independence activist, and the government posthumously awarded him the Order of Merit for National Foundation, Patriotic Medal, to honor his service. Since then, a bust of the patriot has been erected in his hometown, and a memorial service is held every year. This annual memorial service is held on June 11, organized by the Gwangsan Kim Clan lineage and the Hwaseong Branch of the Korea Liberation Association.

When looking back at the life of Patriot Kim Yong-chang, there is one more person we must never forget: his mother. The sudden, thunderclap-like death of her eldest son, followed ten days later by her husband, who passed away from the shock—the life of this mother, who had to endure cruel years while embracing her remaining young children, is hard to face without tears. At the time, she was only thirty-seven years old, and she ultimately passed away in 1986 without ever hearing the news of her eldest son's national decoration. Today, her younger son and his wife prepare a devout memorial table every year, passing down the words of their mother, who was extremely strict yet frugal.

This hero's story, which came close to being forgotten, has finally reached the hearts of growing children through the pen of a children's book author. In 2019, marking the 100th anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement, author Han Young-mi was searching for independence activists from her hometown. Fascinated by the fiery life of Patriot Kim Yong-chang, she published the children's story Graffiti Independence Movement. This book movingly portrays the fiery courage of the young Kim Yong-chang, who used pencils and brushes as weapons to engrave the desire for independence on every wall despite strict Japanese surveillance, tailored to a child's perspective.

The outcry of the boy who engraved light through graffiti in the darkness serves as a precious guide through this book, reminding today's children of the preciousness of their country and freedom. Inspired by this connection, Author Han Young-mi attends the memorial service every year to recite a poem she wrote herself to honor the patriot's spirit. The following is the memorial poem written by Author Han Young-mi and recited at this year's memorial service.

An Unsent Letter: To My Longed-For Mother

                                      Poem by Han Young-mi

Mother, it is me, Yong-chang.
By now, the barley in the fields of Sangdu-ri must be ripening.
I picture you, Mother, working with a bent back
In the barley field undulating with a golden hue.

Mother, you must have been anxious because there were no letters, right?
I am currently in prison.
I wrote on the wall of the Postal Bureau Insurance Management Office that the time for independence has come,
And urged the 26 million compatriots of Joseon to welcome independence.
Because of that, I was arrested and confined.

For writing those words, I was hung upside down from the ceiling.
Because I did not give up the names of those who wrote with me,
the undersides of my fingernails were pierced.
Mother, please do not be too heartbroken because I tell you these things.
You know how it is sometimes—
Those days when you just want to throw a tantrum to your mother.

Mother, I miss you.
I desperately want to survive and return to your side.
On a midsummer day in June, where the sunlight pours down brightly,
Passing through the fields where dragonflies fly leisurely,
Splashing across the Gwanri-cheon Stream where clear water flows year-round,
Right into the middle of the yellow barley field swaying peacefully,
I want to run and find your white headscarf.

Mother, even if I am too late in returning,
Or if not a single letter arrives,
Please do not worry or grieve.
On the day our country becomes independent,
I will surely find my way into your heart.
Until then, please stay healthy and well.

From your son, Kim Yong-chang

The last patriot to die for the country before liberation. A nineteen-year-old youth, Kim Yong-chang. The sentences he left on the walls were not mere graffiti, but a desperate cry of love for his homeland exchanged for his life. We must forever remember his fiery life and the tears of the family left behind.
