Showing the Aesthetics and Spirituality of Traditional Dance Accumulated Over Many Years

Hamgyongnam-do Sword Dance Preservation Association, Four Seasons – Summer 'Kang Yun-sun's Dance'
Transmission is not merely a matter of preserving the form, but a process of carrying forward the spirit.

Seasons are the cycle of nature, but in traditional art, they become symbols that contain the philosophy of life and time. The traditional dance series Four Seasons by the Hamgyongnam-do Sword Dance Preservation Association is an initiative that expresses the meaning of these seasons through our dance. If spring sang of the beginning of life, summer is a time to encounter the most vigorous vitality and deepened artistry. Held yesterday, July 4, at 6 PM at the traditional performance creation space 'Gwangmudae' in Jongno-gu, Seoul, Four Seasons – Summer: 'Kang Yun-sun's Dance' showcased the aesthetics and spirituality that traditional dance has accumulated while enduring for many years on one stage, confirming once again that tradition is an art alive today.

The beauty of Korean dance does not originate from flashy movements. Its essence is finally revealed in the breathing that moves yet stops, stops yet creates, the tension embedded within disciplined lines, and the space for contemplation created by voids. Taepyeongmu (Kang Seon-young style), Janggochum (Kang Seon-young style), and Gyobangmu (Jeong Min style) presented by Kang Yun-sun were stages that faithfully embodied these aesthetics of Korean dance.

Kang Yun-sun, the central dancer of the Four Seasons – Summer: 'Kang Yun-sun's Dance' edition, stated in her greeting, "Dance goes beyond simple movement to become a precious cultural heritage that contains the emotions of the times and the stories of life. I hope this performance will provide a meaningful time for everyone to feel the deep style and excitement of traditional dance, as well as the emotions of Koreans embedded within it." Her dream was fully realized amidst the enthusiastic response of the audience.

Rather than showing off technical skills, her dance fully infused her breath into the flow of the rhythmic patterns (jangdan). The movement that started from the fingertips naturally connected to her gaze and footwork, and the aesthetics of dance—which empties rather than fills the space—allowed the audience to look beyond the movement and perceive its lingering resonance. In particular, the organic flow formed within the relationship where dance and music lead and rely on each other highlighted the deep spirituality and dignity of Korean dance even more clearly.

This performance was a collaborative event arranged by the Hamgyongnam-do Sword Dance Preservation Association and its academic research institute, serving as a venue of transmission where performance and scholarship breathed together. Notably, the Hamgyongnam-do Sword Dance (Hamgyongnam-do Geommu) is a work that connects the lineage of transmission extending through Jang Hong-sim and Han Sun-ok to Yang Seung-mi, representing a cultural memory that embraces and carries forward the local history and life beyond a simple genealogy. Its unique format of never releasing the sword from the hand, along with straight yet disciplined movements, vividly captured the distinct spirit and mettle of northern traditional dance.

In that day's performance, the artistic value of the dance shown by Yang Seung-mi, who performed the Hamgyongnam-do Sword Dance, was revealed through unwavering restraint rather than flashy techniques. The movements, where strength and flexibility coexist, transcended the individual skill of the dancer to show the aesthetic consciousness accumulated by the community over a long time. This work silently proved the fact that transmission is not merely a matter of preserving the form, but a process of carrying forward the spirit.

In addition, Sugeonchum (Shin Kwan-cheol style) performed by Shin Jeong-a of the Hamgyongnam-do Sword Dance Preservation Association captured the delicate breath and flexible linear aesthetics unique to Korean dance. The void and flow created by the handkerchief harmonized with the dance movements to evoke deep emotions. Meanwhile, Jinsoechum (Yang Seung-mi style) performed together by Kim Hyun-sook, Lee Young-hoon, Shin Jeong-a, and Shin Seon-mi added vitality to the performance's flow with dynamic rhythms and powerful movements. Different dance movements achieved harmony within a single stage, demonstrating the wide aesthetic spectrum of our traditional dance.

The grand finale of the performance, Pangut by the traditional creative performance group 'Yeonhee Connect Eeul', was a stage that symbolically showed the potential expansion of tradition. The performance based on joy and excitement blurred the boundaries between the audience and the stage, naturally reminding people that tradition does not remain a heritage of the past but is a living, breathing culture within our present lives.

The excitement and power exploding from the young performers particularly cast a spell that left the audience completely captivated. Having lost themselves watching the endlessly spinning sangmo (hat ribbons), the audience enjoyed themselves together while spinning the beona (spinning dishes).

Today, traditional art faces two simultaneous challenges: preservation and change. The effort to preserve the prototype and the attempt to reflect the contemporary sensibility are not conflicting values, but rather represent the direction of 'Beopgochangshin' (creating new things based on the old) to move forward together. The Four Seasons series by the Hamgyongnam-do Sword Dance Preservation Association holds even greater significance as it steadily seeks this balance and presents both the present and future of traditional dance.

  • ▲ Pangut by the traditional creative performance group 'Yeonhee Connect Eeul'

Four Seasons – Summer: 'Kang Yun-sun's Dance' did not stop at being a performance that merely showcases the beauty of traditional dance. It was an artistic proposal that re-established the long-standing spirit of dance on today's stage and demonstrated how it should connect with contemporary audiences.

Eo Jeong-hui (47) from Ahyeon-dong, who came to see the performance, said, "Today's traditional dance series performance by the Hamgyongnam-do Sword Dance Preservation Association clearly showed what our traditional dance is. I couldn't help but be deeply moved by the dancers' efforts to show depth through stillness and emptiness. I look forward to and will keep watching the upcoming traditional dance series performances by the Hamgyongnam-do Sword Dance Preservation Association."

Seasons flow by, but tradition does not stop. When constantly reinterpreted within the time of our lives, our dance ceases to be a heritage of the past and becomes a living, moving culture toward the future. Four Seasons – Summer went beyond a performance that talks about the season, serving as a cultural record that proved the way tradition lives on today. Looking forward to the next stage, 'Autumn – Lee Young-hoon's Dance' with even greater anticipation, I send a big round of applause to the steps taken by the Hamgyongnam-do Sword Dance Preservation Association in their Four Seasons journey.
