[우리문화신문=양인선 문화전문기자]  유네스코 자연유산이라는 명성만 듣고 별다른 계획 없이 가벼운 마음으로 당일치기 여행을 떠났던 순천, 하지만 그곳에서 마주한 순천만 습지는 기대 그 이상의 커다란 감동과 위로를 안겨 주었습니다.

 

순천만 습지에 들어서면 가장 먼저 눈앞에 끝없이 펼쳐진 초록색 갈대밭이 시선을 사로잡습니다. 갈대숲 보전을 위해 정성스럽게 조성된 나무 데크길을 따라 걷다 보면, 여름바람에 사각거리며 일렁이는 녹색물결의 장관을 마주하게 됩니다. 그저 걷는 것만으로도 마음이 맑아지는 이 푸른 갈대숲 사이사이에는 순천만의 특별한 생태계 이야기가 숨어있습니다.

 

 

 

생태체험 해설사님의 흥미진진한 설명을 들으며 순천이 이 아름다운 자연을 지키기 위해 얼마나 지극한 정성을 쏟았는지 알 수 있었습니다. 놀랍게도 순천 시민들은 이곳을 찾는 철새들을 보호하려고 습지 주변의 전봇대를 모두 철거했다고 합니다. 철새들이 날아가다 날개가 걸려 다치는 일이 없도록 배려한 것입니다. 순천 시민들의 이 노력 덕분에 과거 700여 마리에 불과했던 흑두루미가 8,000여 마리까지 늘어나 겨울마다 장관을 이룬다고 하니 절로 고개가 숙여집니다.

 

갈대숲 아래로 눈을 돌리면 또 다른 세상이 펼쳐집니다. 온갖 생물이 분주히 뛰노는 갯벌은 그야말로 거대한 자연의 놀이터였습니다. 자세히 들여다본 갯벌의 삶은 치열하면서도 정겨웠습니다.

 

갯벌의 숨구멍인 '겟구멍'을 차지하려고 커다란 집게발을 치켜들고 싸우는 농게들의 모습은 처절했습니다. 또한 사랑에 눈이 멀어 등지느러미를 활짝 펼친 채 눈을 위로 쑥 내밀고 분주히 움직이는 망둥어들의 모습은 웃음은 귀엽고 재미있습니다.

 

 

 

 

 

그 풍부한 먹잇감 사이로 커다란 왜가리 한 마리가 보였습니다. 갯벌 위에 고고하게 서 있던 왜가리가 순식간에 커다란 물고기 한 마리를 낚아채 한입에 꿀꺽 삼키는 자연의 야생미는 한 참 발길을 멈추기에 충분합니다.

 

갈대숲 길을 지나 완만한 산길을 숨차게 오르면 마침내 용산전망대에 다다릅니다. 그곳에서 내려다본 순천만의 풍광은 그야말로 압권이었습니다. 갯벌 사이를 부드러운 S자로 굽이쳐 흐르는 물길과 그 주변을 동글동글하게 감싸안은 초록빛 갈대 군락은 어디서도 볼 수 없는 독보적인 매력을 뿜어내고 있었습니다. 수많은 사진 촬영가가 왜 카메라를 들고 이곳을 끊임없이 찾는지 알겠습니다.

 

 

이번 여행에서는 여정상 아쉽게 발길을 돌려야 했지만, 순천만은 밤이 되면 진짜 숨겨진 매력이 드러나는 곳입니다. 철새 보호를 위해 불빛을 최소화하여 칠흑같이 어두운 밤을 유지하는 덕분에, 국내 첫 평지천문대인 순천만 천문대에서는 낮에는 새를 보고 밤에는 별이 쏟아지는 밤하늘을 관측할 수 있을 것 같습니다. 인근 청정 마을에선 반딧불이도 만날 수 있다고 하니 자연의 순수함이 그대로 살아 숨 쉬는 곳이 틀림없습니다.

 

우연히 만난 버스와 택시 기사님들의 순박하고 따뜻한 정, 그리고 자연을 향한 순천 사람들의 대단한 자긍심을 느끼며 참 많은 것을 배운 여정이었습니다.

 

맑은 음력 그믐날 저녁, 온 세상을 붉게 물들이는 찬란한 습지의 해넘이를 감상한 뒤 쏟아지는 별빛 아래 머물 수 있도록, 다음번에는 갈대숲이 황금빛으로 일렁이는 어느 가을날에 꼭 다시 날을 잡아 꼼꼼히 계획하고 찾고 싶습니다. 기대 그 이상의 위로를 선물해 준 순천만 습지, 머지않은 날에 다시 만날 수 있기를 소망해 봅니다.

The Emotional Resonance of Green Reeds and a Living Tidal Flat

A Journey to Suncheonman Bay Wetland, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Hearing only of its reputation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, I set off for Suncheon on a lighthearted day trip without any particular plan. However, the Suncheonman Bay Wetland I encountered there brought me deep emotion and comfort far beyond my expectations.

 

Upon entering the Suncheonman Bay Wetland, the first thing that catches your eye is the endless green reed field stretching out before you. As you walk along the wooden deck path, carefully built for the preservation of the reed forest, you come face to face with the spectacular sight of green waves swaying and rustling in the summer breeze. Just walking through this lush reed forest clears your mind, and hidden between the reeds are the unique ecological stories of Suncheonman Bay.

 

 

 

Listening to the fascinating explanations of the eco-experience guide, I could learn how much sincere effort the citizens of Suncheon have dedicated to protecting this beautiful nature. Amazingly, the residents of Suncheon removed all the utility poles around the wetland to protect the migratory birds that visit this place. This thoughtful gesture was made to prevent the birds from getting caught and injured by the power lines while flying. Thanks to these efforts of Suncheon citizens, the number of hooded cranes—which used to be only around 700 in the past—has increased to over 8,000, creating a spectacular winter view that commands deep respect.

 

When you look down below the reed forest, another world unfolds. The tidal flat, where all kinds of creatures are busily moving around, was truly a massive playground of nature. Looking closely, life on the tidal flat was both fierce and heartwarming. The sight of fiddler crabs lifting their massive claws and fighting to claim a "mud hole," the breathing vent of the tidal flat, was intense. On the other hand, the busy movements of mudskippers—who seemed blinded by love as they spread their dorsal fins wide and popped their eyes upward—were cute, funny, and brought a smile to my face.

 

 

 

 

 

Amidst this abundant food supply, a large grey heron caught my eye. Standing gracefully on the tidal flat, the heron suddenly snatched a large fish and swallowed it in a single gulp. This display of nature's raw wilderness was enough to make me pause in my tracks for quite a while.

 

Passing the reed forest trail and making a breathless climb up a gentle mountain path, you finally reach the Yongsan Observatory. The scenery of Suncheonman Bay looking down from there was absolutely breathtaking. The waterway curved gently in an S-shape through the tidal flat, surrounded by round, green reed clusters. It exuded a unique charm that cannot be seen anywhere else. I could instantly understand why so many photographers endlessly visit this spot with their cameras.

 

 

Although I had to cut my journey short this time due to my schedule, Suncheonman Bay is a place where its true hidden charm is revealed at night. Thanks to the minimization of artificial lights to protect the migratory birds, maintaining a pitch-black night, the Suncheonman Astronomical Observatory—the first flatland observatory in Korea—seems perfect for watching birds by day and observing a night sky overflowing with stars by night. Fireflies can also be found in the nearby clean villages, proving beyond a doubt that this is a place where the purity of nature stays alive and breathes.

 

It was a journey where I learned so much, feeling the innocent, warm affection of the bus and taxi drivers I happened to meet, as well as the immense pride the people of Suncheon have for their nature. On a clear evening of a lunar last day, after admiring the brilliant sunset that dyes the whole world red over the wetland, I wish to stay under the pouring starlight. Next time, I will definitely plan meticulously to visit again on a golden autumn day when the reed fields sway beautifully. Suncheonman Bay Wetland, which gifted me comfort beyond my expectations—I hope to meet you again in the near future.

緑の葦と生きて息づく干潟がもたらす感動

ユネスコ自然遺産「順天湾湿地」旅行記

ユネスコ世界自然遺産という名声だけを耳にし、特別な計画もなく軽い気持ちで日帰り旅行に出かけた順天（スンチョン）。しかし、そこで目にした順天湾（スンチョンマン）湿地は、期待以上の大きな感動と慰めを届けてくれました。

 

順天湾湿地に足を踏み入れると、まず目の前に果てしなく広がる緑色の葦原が目を奪います。葦原の保全のために丁寧に整備された木道（ウッドデッキ）に沿って歩いていると、夏の風にサラサラと揺れる緑の波の壮観に出会うことができます。ただ歩くだけでも心が澄み渡るこの青々とした葦原のあちこちには、順天湾ならではの特別な生態系の物語が隠されています。

 

 

 

生態体験解説士の興味深い説明を聞きながら、順天がこの美しい自然を守るためにどれほど至誠を尽くしてきたかを知ることができました。驚くべきことに、順天の市民たちはここを訪れる渡り鳥を保護するため、湿地周辺の電柱をすべて撤去したそうです。渡り鳥が飛び立つ際に翼を引っかけて怪我をすることがないよう配慮したのです。順天市民のこの努力のおかげで、かつては700羽余りにすぎなかったナベヅルが8,000羽余りにまで増え、冬ごとに壮観を成しているとのことには、自然と頭が下がります。

 

葦原の下に目を向けると、また別の世界が広がっています。あらゆる生き物が忙しく動き回る干潟は、まさに巨大な自然の遊び場でした。間近で観察した干潟の営みは、熾烈でありながらも情が通い合うものでした。干潟の呼吸口である「泥の穴」を占有しようと、大きなハサミを振り上げて戦うシオマネキたちの姿は必死そのものでした。また、恋に盲目となり、背びれをいっぱいに広げたまま目を上へと突き出してせわしなく動くトビハゼたちの姿は、可愛らしくて面白く、思わず笑みがこぼれます。

 

 

 

 

 

その豊富な餌が溢れる中で、一羽の大きなアオサギが目に留まりました。干潟の上に気高く佇んでいたアオサギが、一瞬にして大きな魚を一匹捕らえ、一口で丸呑みにする自然の野生美は、しばらく足を止めるのに十分なものでした。

 

葦原の道を通り抜け、緩やかな山道を息を切らしながら登ると、ついに龍山（ヨンサン）展望台に到着します。そこから見下ろした順天湾の風景は、まさに圧巻の一言に尽きました。干潟の間を滑らかなS字を描いて蛇行する水路と、その周辺を丸く包み込むような緑色の葦の群落は、他では決して見ることのできない独特な魅力を放っていました。数多くの写真家がなぜカメラを手にこの場所を絶えず訪れるのか、深く納得がいきました。

 

 

今回の旅行では日程の都合上、名残惜しくも帰路に就かなければなりませんでしたが、順天湾は夜になると真の隠された魅力が姿を現す場所です。渡り鳥の保護のために人工の明かりを最小限に抑え、漆黒のような暗闇の夜を維持しているおかげで、韓国初の平地天文台である順天湾天文台では、昼には鳥を眺め、夜には星が降り注ぐ夜空を観測することができそうです。近隣の清らかな村ではホタルにも出会えるとのことなので、自然の純粋さがそのまま息づいている場所に間違いありません。

 

偶然出会ったバスやタクシーの運転手さんたちの素朴で温かい人情、そして自然に対する順天の人々の大きな自負心を感じ、本当に多くのことを学んだ旅路でした。澄んだ旧暦の晦日の夕方、世界中を赤く染める絢爛な湿地の夕日を鑑賞したのち、降り注ぐ星明かりの下に佇むことができるよう、次回は葦原が黄金色に波打つある秋の日に必ず再び日程を合わせて、綿密に計画を立てて訪れたいと思います。期待以上の慰めをプレゼントしてくれた順天湾湿地、遠くない日にまた出会えることを願っています。
