             망초(亡草)의 노래

 

   농부의 흐르는 땀방울 속에서
   진저리치며 뽑아내던 원망의 잡풀
   얼마나 잊고 싶을 만큼 미웠으면
   나라를 망하게 한 꽃이라 이름 붙였을까.

 

   도시의 메마른 공원에서 
   기적처럼 무리 지어 피어난 어여쁨
   사방이 막힌 빌딩 숲 사이에서 
   하얀 눈송이처럼 곱게도 피었구나.

 

   누군가에게는 지우고 싶은 아픔이되
   지친 도시민에게는 가만히 건네는 위로
   미움도 그리움도 모두 녹여내며
   오늘도 소박한 계란꽃은 환히 웃는다.

The Song of Mangcho (The Ruin-Weed)

Amidst the flowing sweat of the farmers
A cursed weed torn out with utter vexation
How deeply must they have wished to forget and hate it
To name it the flower that brought ruin to the nation.

 

Yet in the parched park of the city
A miracle of clustered loveliness unfolds
Amidst the building forest enclosed on all sides
Like white snowflakes how beautifully it blooms.

 

To someone it is a painful memory to erase
To weary city dwellers a quiet comfort gently given
Melting away all the hatred and all the yearning
Today again the humble egg-flower smiles so bright.

農夫の流れる汗のしずくの中で
心底嫌がられ引き抜かれた怨みの雑草
どれほど忘れたいほど憎かったのだろう
国を滅ぼす花とその名が付けられたのは。

 

都会の乾いた公園で
奇跡のように群れをなして咲いた愛らしさ
四方が遮られたビルの森の間で
白い雪のように何と美しく咲いたことか。

 

誰かにとっては消し去りたい痛みであり
疲れた都会人にとっては静かに差し出される慰め
憎しみも恋しさもすべて溶かしながら
今日も素朴な卵の花は晴れやかに笑っている。
