Connecting the Lives of the Visually Impaired through Writing and Music

The National Library for the Disabled Operates the Program 'Record Life, Meet the World'

Choi Seon-hun's Coexisting Life

From last May to July, the Guro Mirae Library operated the program 'Record Life, Meet the World' as part of the '2026 Reading Culture Program Support Project for the Disabled' hosted by the National Library for the Disabled. This project was organized in cooperation with the Guro Branch of the Seoul Association of the Visually Impaired to help visually impaired individuals record their lives in autobiographies. It provided a meaningful time where volunteers participated as ghostwriters to leave behind life stories in writing.

Everyone has their own unique life story. However, it is never easy for a visually impaired person to organize their memories and experiences into a single book. This program was a special cultural and reading program that helped participants look back on their lives and leave precious memories as autobiographies, while also allowing them to communicate with volunteers and reflect on the meaning of life.

The author participated in this program as a volunteer ghostwriter. At first, I thought my role was simply to transcribe the participants' words into text. However, as the sessions repeated, I realized that it was not mere ghostwriting, but a process of deeply listening to, understanding, and recording a person's life together.

Participants candidly shared their childhood memories, love for their families, times spent accepting and living with their disabilities, turning points in life, the happiest moments, and even the most painful memories. At times, the room was filled with laughter, and at other times, eyes welled up with tears. Volunteers listened intently with deep attention so as not to miss those stories, and carefully recorded each sentence with sincerity so that the participant's emotions and meanings could naturally be imbued within the text.

Particularly in the latter part of the program, participants spent time looking back on their lives under the theme of 'Preparing for My Last Days'. Through questions such as "What do you want people to remember most about your life?", "What kind of person do you want to be remembered as?", and "What do you hope those left behind will learn from your life?", participants looked back on their lives once again. This was not a time to prepare for death, but a time of reflection to carefully organize the life lived so far and to live the remaining life more meaningfully.

This program brought a profound resonance to the volunteers as well. I could feel that volunteering is not about one-sidedly helping someone, but a process of understanding, empathizing with each other's lives, and growing together. Above all, I newly realized that just listening to someone's story until the very end can provide immense comfort and respect.

The final class of the program was even more special. Time was set aside to reconstruct the autobiographies completed by the participants into songs in their favorite musical styles, utilizing generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. Based on the contents of the autobiography, the AI created lyrics and completed a song tailored to the musical atmosphere preferred by the participant.

The moment their own life stories were reborn as music, participants could not hide their amazement and emotion. As lives recorded in text were connected to songs, the autobiographies expanded beyond mere records into new cultural content, becoming a special gift that could convey their lives more intimately to family and neighbors.

This program was also a meaningful case demonstrating that AI technology does not replace people, but can serve as a tool to express human stories more richly. It was an even more meaningful time in that it presented new possibilities for recording the lives of people with disabilities by merging traditional autobiography writing with digital technology.

The 'Record Life, Meet the World' program was not just a simple reading culture program. It was a precious project that once again reminded us that everyone has the right to record their life and be remembered, and that a disability should not restrict that right. Furthermore, it was a time for volunteers to learn the value of listening and empathy, and a meaningful journey for participants to look back on their lives and encourage themselves.

This experience will remain in the author's memory for a long time. Leaving someone's life in writing is not merely a task of composing sentences, but a precious deed of respecting a person's life and carrying those memories into the future. In the process of recording these lives, the author instead learned once again the meaning of life, the preciousness of family, and the value of listening intently to each other's stories.

This article was also completed by first drafting the text using generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) based on the author's experiences in the program, and then directly conducting fact-checking, expression revisions, and content supplements. By applying the method of utilizing AI experienced in the program to article writing, I was able to directly experience that AI is not an entity that replaces humans, but a collaborative tool that helps organize and deliver human thoughts and experiences more effectively.

'Record Life, Meet the World', which took place at the Guro Mirae Library, went beyond a program that makes a single autobiography. It was a meaningful project that demonstrated the possibilities of a new reading culture where life stories are left behind in writing and music, people are connected to people, and AI technology and culture harmonize together. I look forward to these programs continuing to expand in the future so that more people with disabilities can record their lives, communicate with the world, and pass those precious stories down to the next generation for a long time to come.
