인수 대비는 성종의 어머니이며, 시아버지 세조로부터 ‘효부’라고 새긴 안장을 받을 만큼 효성이 깊었다. 맏며느리로서 세조가 한글을 보급하기 위해 얼마나 많은 노력을 기울였는지 잘 알고 있었다. 그래서 그 뜻을 이어받아 불교와 유교 관련 책들을 한글로 뒤치는 등 한글 보급에 애를 많이 썼다. 또한 궁궐 어른으로서 여성들을 어떻게 교육해야 할지 고민이 많았다.

 

그러다 중국의 고전인 《소학》, 《열녀전》 등에서 부녀자들에게 모범이 될 만한 이야기를 가려 뽑아 1475년 우리나라 첫 한글 여성 교육서를 펴냈다. 《어제 내훈》에는 부녀자의 말과 행동에 관한 이야기를 다루면서 남성이 중심인 사회에서 여성이 어떤 역할을 해야 하는지 알려 주고, 부모를 섬기는 효도에 관한 이야기, 혼인의 예절에 관한 이야기, 어머니로서 갖춰야 할 자세, 친척과의 관계에 관한 이야기 등이 담겨 있다.

 

이 책은 궁궐 여성들을 위해 펴냈지만, 양반가의 부녀자들은 물론 나라의 모든 여성에게 집안을 잘 다를 수 있는 방법을 가르치고 깨우쳐주었다. 주석까지 모두 한글로 풀어 써서 내용을 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 배려한 점이 돋보인다.

Queen Insu, the mother of King Seongjong, was known for her deep filial piety, earning praise from her father-in-law, King Sejo, who even had a plaque engraved with the title “Filial Daughter-in-Law” in recognition of her virtue. As the eldest daughter-in-law, she was well aware of the efforts Sejo had made to promote Hangeul.

 

Taking up his legacy, Queen Insu worked tirelessly to spread Hangeul, translating Buddhist and Confucian texts into Hangeul. As a royal figure in the palace, she was also deeply concerned about the education of women. In 1475, she published Eoje Naehun, the first Hangeul educational book for women in Korea. Drawing from Chinese classics such as Sohak and Yeolnyeojeon, she selected stories that would serve as moral examples for women. The book offers advice on women’s speech and behavior, emphasizing the roles they should play in a male-centered society. It also covers topics like filial piety, the proper etiquette for marriage, the responsibilities of motherhood, and how to maintain relationships with relatives.

 

Although originally published for women in the palace, Eoje Naehun became an important guide for women from noble families and served as a practical manual for women across the nation to manage their households effectively. What made the book particularly accessible was its use of Hangeul, with annotations written in the script to ensure that women could easily understand the content. This thoughtful approach helped make the teachings practical and clear for all women.

仁粹大妃、ハングル女性教育書『御製内訓（オジェネフン）』を 刊行

仁粹大妃は成宗（ソンジョン）の母であり、義父である世祖（セジョ）から「孝婦（親孝行な嫁）」と刻まれた鞍を贈られるほど、親孝行の尽くし方が深い人物であった。長男の妻として、世祖がハングルを普及させるためにどれほどの努力を傾けていたかをよく知っていた。そのため、その意志を受け継いで仏教や儒教関連の書籍をハングルに翻訳するなど、ハングルの普及に大変尽力した。また、宮廷の長老として、女性たちをどのように教育すべきか深く悩んでいた。

 

そうした中、中国の古典である『小学』や『烈女伝』などから、婦女子の模範となるような物語を選び出し、1475年に我が国初のハングル女性教育書を刊行した。『御製内訓』には、婦女子の言葉遣いや行動に関する物語を扱いながら、男性中心の社会で女性がどのような役割を果たすべきかを教え、親に仕える孝行に関する物語、婚姻の礼儀に関する物語、母親として備えるべき心構え、親戚との関係に関する物語などが収められている。

 

この本は宮廷の女性たちのために刊行されたが、両班（ヤンバン）家の婦女子はもちろん、国中のすべての女性に家庭を立派に切り盛りする方法を教え諭した。注釈まですべてハングルで分かりやすく書き、内容を簡単に理解できるよう配慮した点が際立っている。
