1506년(연산 12년), 세종대왕이 한글을 창제한 뒤 가장 큰 한글 사용 탄압 사건이 벌어졌다. 연산군이 포악한 정치를 펼치자, 백성들은 참지 못하고 한글로 임금의 비행을 적어 폭로했다. 그 일에 분개한 연산군은 즉시 사대문 출입을 통제하고 한양 도성 안 사람들을 대상으로 한글을 쓰는 사람과 쓰지 않는 사람으로 구분하게 했다.

그리고 만약 한글을 쓰는데 신고하지 않는 사람, 그것을 알고도 고발하지 않는 사람을 엄히 다스린다는 방을 붙였다. 한글을 가르치지도 말고 배우지도 말며, 이미 배운 사람도 쓰지 못하게 한 것이다. 더 나아가 한글로 뒤친(번역) 책을 모두 불사르라고 명을 내렸다.

King Yeonsangun Bans the Use of Hangeul

In 1506 (the 12th year of King Yeonsan’s reign), one of the most severe crackdowns on the use of Hangeul since its creation by King Sejong. When King Yeonsangun ruled with tyranny, the people could no longer tolerate his reign and began to write about the king’s misconduct in Hangeul, exposing his actions. Infuriated by this, King Yeonsangun immediately restricted access to the four main gates of the city and ordered the people of Hanyang (Seoul) to be divided into two groups—those who used Hangeul and those who did not.

He further decreed that anyone who wrote in Hangeul without reporting it, or anyone who failed to report others doing so, would be severely punished. The king banned both the teaching and learning of Hangeul and made it illegal for those who already knew it from using it. In addition, he ordered all books that had been translated into Hangeul to be burned.
